To commence Tubig Talino’s production, Bago Ibaan
Multipurpose Cooperative’s (BIMPC) engaged its workers to a Technology Transfer
Training facilitated by FNRI-DOST in collaboration with DOST Batangas for
knowledge and skills generation held at BIMPC’s New Fresh Water Refilling
Station Facility, Brgy. Bago, Ibaan, Batangas, May 10-11.
The implementation of the Tubig Talino Technology for
BIMPC is a Grants-in-Aid project of DOST CALABARZON PSTC Batangas which aims to
contribute to government’s efforts in addressing the incidence of micronutrient
deficiency in the country and eventually help increase the performance of the
school children.
Ms. Trinidad II Arcangel and Ms. Abbie Padrones of
FNRI-DOST served as the speakers during the training. Preparation of the tubig
talino premix was the top-most priority of the discussion. Titration, also
known as titrimetry which is a common laboratory method of quantitative
chemical analysis used to determine the unknown concentration of an identified
analyte, was also taught to participants to analyze whether they have reach the
significant amount of iodine required in producing a tubig talino premix which
will be then subjected to third party laboratory analysis. Fraction of premix
required in the preparation of the iodine-rich drinking water was also stressed
out to the participants.
Tubig talino technology entails a lot of importance to
people and to our fast-changing society. This Iodine fortification of drinking
water is a big boost to the government’s iodine deficiency disorder (IDD)
control program since water, as the nutrient vehicle, is a basic need consumed daily.
Thus, this is proven to help meet the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of a
male adult, according to DOST-FNRI.
Five (5) glasses a day of iodine-rich drinking water
provides 120 micrograms of iodine which meets 100% of the recommended dietary
allowance (RDA) of a male adult, according to DOST-FNRI. Moreover, studies show
that iodine prevents goiter, mental and physical retardation, and brain
defects, and also contributes to the solution of iodine deficiency anemia
problems among the populace especially the children.
Meanwhile, a forum on Tubig Talino Technology will be
conducted for school principals and students in Bago, Ibaan and its neighboring
localities this June 2018. The forum will be used as a platform in raising
awareness among participants the relevance of Tubig Talino in the existing
micronutrient deficiency prevalence and shall also serve as the promotional
strategy of the cooperative in marketing their product. (John Maico M. Hernandez)
