DTI urges MSMEs to embrace e-commerce

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is prompting the country’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to take advantage of global trade opportunities through e-commerce.
“We are focusing our promotion activities on e-commerce, not only within the East Asia subregion but as well as nationally to help MSMEs to engage in borderless trade,” said Prudencio M. Reyes Jr., DTI Undersecretary for Special Concerns
In 2013, local e-commerce was valued at about USD 1.3B. The target is to raise the current contribution of e-commerce to the local economy from 10% to 25% by the year 2020.
The Philippine E-commerce Roadmap (PECR) 2016-2020 was developed to enhance the country’s e-commerce ecosystem focusing on infrastructure, innovation, investment, information flow, intellectual capital, and integration.
Based on the roadmap, the country’s e-commerce industry is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 101.4% between 2013 and 2018 on the back of a fast growing internet population, and by 2020, 100,000 out of the more than 937,000 MSMEs in the country is targeted to engage in e-commerce.
The roadmap also envisions that 40% to 50% of the Philippine’s 44.2M internet users - about a third of Southeast Asia ’s 143.1M - will utilize e-commerce by 2020.
The DTI conducts roadshows around the country to promote e-commerce among MSMEs and help entrepreneurs acquaint themselves with e-business models, online payments, website development, e-commerce platform, and digital marketing.
“The Philippines , considering its sizeable youth population and a slightly smaller population in the working-age range, is thus well-placed to see an increase in online retail in the near future,” it said. (Charlie S. Dajao, DTI Calabarzon/DTI-KMIS/J.Cabactulan)
