Cayetano, allies to push for 10k cash aid in Bayanihan 3 bicam

Former Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday said he and his allies are determined to persuade the House and Senate contingents to the bicameral conference on Bayanihan 3 to adopt a provision on the distribution of P10,000 to every Filipino household.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Nationwide on May 28, Cayetano said he and his allies decided not to prolong debates on Bayanihan 3 but will continue to push fellow lawmakers to support the expansion of the government’s cash aid program.

“Napag-usapan ng grupo wag nang pahabain ang debate kasi ilang araw na lang at pabayaan na siyang pumasa nang ganyan, pero ipaglaban sa bicam at magkumbinsi pa ng ilan pang mga kongresista na sampung libo ang minimum na kailangan ng bawat pamilya para makaahon,” he said.

(The group decided not to prolong the debate since we only have a few session days left. We decided to let Congress pass the bill as it is. But we will bring the fight to the bicameral conference and convince fellow lawmakers that P10,000 is the minimum amount that every family needs in order to recover.)

The House of Representatives approved the Bayanihan 3 bill on second reading on Tuesday, May 25.

In early February, Cayetano and his allies filed the 10k Ayuda Bill, aiming to distribute P10,000 to every Filipino family to boost household consumption and stimulate the economy.

While the proposed measure was consolidated into the Bayanihan 3 bill, the House economic affairs and social services committees did not adopt the provision on the distribution of P10,000 per household.

The 10k Ayuda Bill inspired the “Sampung Libong Pag-Asa” program, a relief initiative led by Cayetano and allies in the House of Representatives.

To date, the group has distributed cash aid to the poorest of the poor in Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Camarines Sur, Caloocan City, Marikina City, Quezon City, Taguig City, Mandaluyong City, Pateros, Laguna, Rizal, and Leyte.

In the program’s latest leg, Cayetano and his allies in Bulacan distributed cash aid to around 500 individuals in the province on Friday as well as an additional 500 who engaged with the Facebook live feed.

“Ang bayanihan ay part ng ekonomiya ng Panginoon. Wala pong ekonomista na magtuturo sa’tin na mamigay nang mamigay,” Cayetano said, adding that their initiative was initially funded from their own pockets and through donations from peers.

(Bayanihan is part of God’s economics. No economist would tell you to give and give.)
