STCIERD Membersundergone Training on IP Basic Information and Patent Drafting provided by Experts


DOST-CALABARZON, Southern Tagalog Consortium for Industry and Energy R&D (STCIERD), andIntellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) joined forces in bringing the 3-day “Training on IP Basic Information and Patent Drafting” to all STCIERD member agencies, state universities and colleges, private higher educational institutions, and National Government Agencies last December 1,3, and 6. The event was joined by 31 participants. Its purpose is to enhance understanding of the basics of intellectual property and to coach members on how to prepare and submit patent applications.

Dr. TirsoRonquillo, the new Chairperson of STCIERD and President of Batangas State University formally opened the event by encouraging the participants and putting weight on how each work contributes to the general placement of the country concerning Intellectual Properties,” Philippines is lagging behind compared to the “giants” in terms of IP – China and other countries, so we need to do more.” Dr. Ronquillio puts a premium on the importance of introducing this “new technical knowledge” to STCIERD members especially the HEIs.

The lecture kicks off with Engr. Maria Teresa Laggui’s, IP Field Operations Specialist, discussion on copyright emphasizing on what is it exactly, what kind of works or Intellectual Properties are protected by it, how to register, and the rights of the owner.

Experts from the Intellectual Property Rights Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Engr. Emmanuel M. Mendoza, IP Field Operations’ Area Manager for North Luzon, and Engr. Eric Paden, Patent Examiner and IP Field Operations Area Manager for Visayas, IPOPHL went to the depths and comprehensively tackled IP Foundation Course, Patent Information, Patent Search and Documentation, and Patent Drafting and Preparation of Specification to which STCIERD members enthusiastically attended together with their potentially patentable works.

The third day was on the interactive and collaborative side as our experts and participants worked hand in hand in examining and assessing the patentability of their works. They also rendered advice and guidance on the entries, paperwork, process, and gave out other important details subjective to each specific technology. (Cesaree Caperare)
