ACEN RES ignites future of sustainable education by powering Letran Calamba with 100% renewable energy
ACEN RES renews commitment to supply Letran Calamba with 100% renewable energy sourced from ACEN’s renewables portfolio
The partnership enables the campus to run entirely on renewables and help avoid approximately 7,877 tons of CO2 emissions
ACEN RES continues its advocacy for renewable energy, inspiring more businesses to transition and contribute to global emission reduction
09 August 2023 – Reaffirming its dedication to a greener future, ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail supply electricity arm of the Ayala group, recently re- committed to empowering Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba with 100% renewable energy. This partnership underscores a significant stride in the institution's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy, contributing substantially to the reduction of carbon emissions.
In a recent event held in Calamba, Laguna, representatives from both ACEN RES and Letran renewed their retail supply contract, an agreement that ensures the educational institution continues to procure its power directly from ACEN RES, bypassing the distribution utility operating in its locale. The partnership, made possible by the government's retail competition and open access (RCOA) program, will enable Letran to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
The Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001 paved the way for RCOA, providing consumers with an average monthly demand of at least 500 kilowatts the freedom to select their electricity supplier, and more importantly, the source of their power, such as renewables.
Situated in Barangay Bucal, Calamba, Laguna, Letran's sprawling 11-hectare campus houses numerous classroom and office buildings, a cutting-edge information and technology (IT) lab, a hybrid-flexible (hyflex) learning facility, and a virtual reality/hologram room. These facilities, serving a vital role in providing students with an enhanced, technologically advanced learning experience, will now be powered entirely by renewable energy.
Rev. Fr. Napoleon M. Encarnacion, O.P., rector and president of the esteemed Dominican institution, said: "We have a significant power requirement, which necessitates a partnership with a reliable, proven energy company. As an Ayala company, ACEN instills confidence that it can meet its commitments. Furthermore, their dedication to renewable energy aligns perfectly with our ethos as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious Catholic educational institution."
Ela Mina, AVP for commercial operations and head of account management of ACEN RES, said: "This partnership with Letran, an institution that is deeply invested in fostering the holistic
development of the next generation of socially and environmentally responsible Filipino leaders, resonates with our advocacy for renewable energy. It brings us a step closer to our goal of inspiring more businesses to transition to renewable energy and play their part in preserving our shared planet."
ACEN RES, the retail arm of the Ayala group’s listed energy platform, ACEN, powers businesses and industries through the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), contributing to a measurable reduction in global carbon emissions.
ACEN recently announced its Net Zero roadmap, the first energy company in Southeast Asia to mobilize a decarbonization strategy and framework by 2050, in line with the broader Ayala group Net Zero target.
