Taguig LGU vows support for VP Sara’s move for 14 schools affected by Makati-Taguig rift

The City Government of Taguig on Thursday assured Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte of its full support after she formed a Transition Committee that would directly supervise the transition plan of 14 schools that would be transferred from Makati to Taguig.

“We would like to thank Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte for taking a decisive role in the implementation of the final and executory Supreme Court decision transferring 10 barangays from Makati back to the jurisdiction of Taguig as it affects the management and administration of the public schools within those barangays,” the city government said in a statement on August 17, 2023.

“Her leadership and wisdom at this time is very much welcomed and appreciated… Her decision to immediately form a Transition Committee without the need for a Writ of Execution, a move that was welcomed by (Makati City) Mayor (Abby) Binay herself, puts an end to that issue and allows all parties to move forward for the benefit of the community,” it added.

The Taguig LGU was referring to the Department of Education (DepEd) order released on Wednesday that said the Office of the Secretary “shall directly supervise the management and administration of all 14 schools, pending a transition plan, effective immediately.”

The LGU said it “looks forward to crafting the transition plan together with the Department of Education and all relevant government agencies.”

“With DepEd order 023 series of 2023, which specifically lists the collation of ‘transition documents’ as a priority, we hope to finally receive the data that we had been requesting from Makati that would allow Taguig to extend assistance to those affected more effectively,” it added.

Expressing support for Duterte’s mandate to “provide a safe and enabling environment for learners, teachers and (DepEd) personnel,” Taguig said it is “likewise committed to the smooth, orderly, and peaceful transition — not just in the conduct relative to the administration of these schools — but in all aspects of community life affected by the Supreme Court decision.”

The LGU also welcomed Mayor Binay’s statement that she will work with the issues of transfer of jurisdiction to Taguig “wholeheartedly with the transition team.”●    Malinaw naman kasi sa sikat ng araw ang desisyon ng Supreme Court na ang EMBO ay sakop ng Taguig. Kapag nagpaatay-atay pa tayo, ang pag-aaral ng mga estudyante ang apektado.

“With this, we fully expect that this will put an end to the constant stream of misleading public pronouncements that have been coming out, and which serves no other purpose than to create confusion and anxiety at a time when we should be calming the public,” the statement ended.

The transition of jurisdiction of Makati to Taguig follows a two-decade legal battle that was ruled by the Supreme Court as final and executory in favor of Taguig in April this year.

The ruling included the transfer of parts of Makati City’s EMBOs or Enlisted Men’s Barrios, along with 14 schools, to the City of Taguig. ###
