On June 2019, Grace Ann Coton, a promising young woman from Guinayangan, Quezon taking-up Bachelor of Elementary Education, became the first ever scholar-beneficiary of the Workers Organization Development Program’s Isabelo Delos Reyes (WODP-IDR) Scholarship of the Department of Labor and Employment Quezon Provincial Office (DOLE QPO). Now, 3 years later, Ms. Coton is graduating from college at the Giunayangan College Foundation, Inc.
“The
scholarship has been a big help for me and my family and being a WODP scholar
encouraged me to always be determined and consistently try to achieve my
desired goals, no matter the difficulties or adversity that I am facing,” said
Ms. Coton.
“I would like to express my utmost gratitude to DOLE because the assistance I consistently received for three years was a big help for me to pay for my tuition, needed books and other requirements in college,” she added.
According to her, she took-up Bachelor of Elementary Education because for her teachers have the greatest opportunity to impact children and the opportunity to change their lives in a very special way.
“Teaching children has always been something that I am dreaming (of) since I was young because I have a passion for teaching and a passion for children,” she said.
Her father, Mr. Ramon Coton is extremely proud and happy of his daughter’s achievement. Mr. Coton who is a member of Quezon 1 Employees’ Association – Association of Genuine Labor Organizations (QUEZEA AGLO), made Grace Ann qualify to avail the said scholarship program.
“I am very grateful to DOLE for this scholarship since this WODP grant is extended not only to workers like me who are union or workers’ organizations members but also to our dependents.” Mr. Coton said.
DOLE QPO Head Mr. Edwin T. Hernandez said that Ms. Coton was awarded with the Isabelo Delos Reyes Scholarship grant in 2019 receiving a total of P174,000 tuition fee in the entire duration of her scholarship which includes book allowance and monthly stipend to finish her course.
“When you think of our Department’s mission to help prepare the youth for the world of work and to develop human resources, WODP is one program we have to help us achieve that goal,” Hernandez said.
“We would like to emphasize the importance of membership to a legitimate and DOLE-recognized workers’ organization which provides several opportunities as we look into the welfare of its members and their dependents,” he added.
WODP-IDR is a scholarship program for legitimate dependents of bonafide officers and members of locals/chapters of labor federations, independent unions, workers’ associations and workers cooperatives. Under this scholarship, grants available include completion of four or five years of Bachelor’s Degree and completion of two-year Technical Course.
